NINTH-INNING ERROR GIVES HOKIES A LOSS

Virginia Tech first baseman Jay Honse committed a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning to allow a runner to score and give Appalachian State a 10-9 college baseball victory Thursday.

Honse made a diving catch on a bunt for the second out in the inning but threw wildly to first in an attempt for a double play. Joe Bernard, who had doubled and was 4-for-5 for the Mountaineers (19-14), scored on the errant throw.

Steve Render and Justin Dobson each had two hits for the Hokies (14-13). Tech used five pitchers, but reliever Jamie Patteson (0-2) got the loss after coming in for the ninth inning.
