RAIDERS ROUT CARLISLE

Blair Calvert hit for the cycle and drove in six runs in leading North Cross in a 40-0 rout of the host Carlisle Chiefs in a Blue Ridge Conference slow-pitch softball game Thursday.

The Raiders' Kelly Baetz allowed no hits in five innings. The game was shortened because of the "10-run slaughter" rule.

Calvert was 4-for-6. Kristen Humphries was 4-for-4 with three doubles and five RBI. North Cross (3-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference) sent 26 to bat in the first inning and 14 in the second.

\ BASEBALL: Scott Phillips of Shawsville struck out 11, walked two, gave up two hits and went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Shawnees (4-1, 1-0) over visiting Auburn (-3, 0-1) 10-2 in the teams' Mountain Empire District opener.

At Radford, Brody Smith, Andy Arnold and Wayne Lineburg each went went 2-for-3 in leading Radford to a 14-4 victory over Floyd County (0-4). Lineburg also pitched the victory for the Bobcats (2-0-1), striking out eight, walking four and giving up two hits.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Shanda Ingram and Lisa Beightol scored two goals each and host Cave Spring defeated North Cross 5-0 in a non-district game.

Sarah Wilke scored the other goal for the Knights (3-1). North Cross goalie Raissa Renandaban had 19 saves, and Cave Spring's Allison McWhorter made 30.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Striker George Vogel scored once in each half as North Cross beat Miller School 3-0 in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Sweeper Tres Moore had the other score for the Raiders (4-0-1, 1-0). Miller School is 1-1 and 0-1.

Nathan Warren had a goal and an assist to help Blacksburg (4-0) beat visiting Radford 3-0 in the teams' New River District opener.

Zach Shifflett and Todd Lyons also scored and Michael Dowdy had two assists for Blacksburg (4-0, 1-0).
