FAIRFAX DEVELOPER DEFAULTS ON LOAN

A Fairfax developer who was one of seven expressing interest in the renovation of Hotel Roanoke into a conference center has defaulted on a $17.75 million loan used to build two office buildings in Northern Virginia.

Henry A. Long Co. borrowed the money for buildings in the Westwood Corporate Center at Tysons Corner. The four- and five-story buildings are scheduled to be auctioned next week.

According to Fairfax County land records, Prudential Insurance Co. lent $17.75 million to the Long company and its partners in the development plan. Neither Thomas McLeod, a senior vice president at Henry Long, nor attorney John Engel, who represents Prudential, would discuss the foreclosure.

Long is a graduate of Virginia Tech. When the school sought proposals for the Hotel Roanoke project, his company responded that it would be interested in learning more about the project. The company did not submit a formal proposal, however. - Staff report
