PHOTOS OF `KENNEDY KIDS' SOUGHT FOR POLICE LINEUP

The police chief of this seaside resort requested photos of "the Kennedy kids" from a newspaper as part of the investigation of an alleged rape at the Kennedy family estate.

Linda Rawls, managing editor of The Palm Beach Daily News, said Thursday that Police Chief Joseph L. Terlizzese called Tuesday night asking for pictures for a photo lineup.

"He asked for the police reporter and requested photos of the Kennedy kids," Rawls said.

Terlizzese has said Sen. Edward Kennedy, 59, his 24-year-old son, Patrick, and 30-year-old nephew, William Kennedy Smith, were at the popular Palm Beach nightspot Au Bar on Friday when they met the woman.

Patrick later said she may have been "the guest of one of my cousins."

The Palm Beach Post on Thursday cited a source it did not identify by name as saying Smith was listed on a police document as the subject of the probe. The Post did not identify the type of police document.

Terlizzese asked The Palm Beach Daily News for photos of Smith, Sen. Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy and John Kennedy Jr., son of the late president, Rawls said. The newspaper refused the request as a matter of policy, she said.

Terlizzese said the woman went to the Kennedy's walled seaside estate for drinks after leaving the nightspot. The woman told police she was raped about 4 a.m. Saturday and was treated at a hospital.

The senator and Patrick Kennedy, a college student and member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, have denied any involvement in the case.

Smith, a medical student at Georgetown University, was described by friends as mild-mannered and quiet.

Terlizzese told The Palm Beach Daily News' police reporter that John Kennedy Jr. had been in town on Easter weekend, Rawls said. John Jr., an assistant district attorney in Manhattan, had not been mentioned previously as being in Palm Beach, but The Washington Post and The Miami Herald Thursday cited reports he was in town for the holiday.

Michael Cherkasky, assistant Manhattan district attorney in charge of investigations, said Thursday that "John Kennedy was not in Florida at the time of the incident."

Police have yet to interview Smith and other potentially important witnesses, The New York Times said in today's editions.
