JEFFREY'S METHODS WOULD ADD TO DIVISION

EVANGELINE Jeffrey would do well to remove the shackles of slavery from her heart for the good of both the black and white people of this valley.

On one hand, she supports the Community Relations Task Force; on the other, with her accusations of racism and brutality at the Police Department, she is destroying everything it's supposed to represent before it has a chance to work.

I cannot say who is right or who is wrong in this most recent situation. I am certainly not going to speculate before all the facts are presented. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Ms. Jeffrey should not be so hasty in making their accusation. The news media will still be there after all the facts are made public, and I'm sure they would allow a front-page headline if the story remained of the same importance.

I agree with Ms. Jeffrey's goal of fairness and equality for the people she represents, but I disagree with her methods. Those methods are only going to divide us further. ROBERT E. AKERS ROANOKE
