Anthony Harris, 29, of Hampton was in the city jail Thursday night, charged with one count of attempted robbery, two weapons charges and four counts of abduction, said police Sgt. Mike Brewer.
Police say it all started with the botched robbery of a nearby 7-Eleven store Thursday. Brewer said Harris tried to rob the store, but fled without any loot after police showed up.
olice gave chase and a block later Harris entered the Walker Apartments.
Lovett Tilor was heading out the door of her apartment when she saw the officer chasing a man around the end of the building. Tilor said Harris forced his way into her apartment.
H put it in my face, and I knocked it away," Tilor said. "I said, `Why'd you come in my house? I don't know you. If you're making trouble, you'd better be making tracks somewhere else.' "
er Harris locked the door behind him, Tilor began yelling at him to get out and started hitting him with her fists, said Tilor's 16-year-old granddaughter, who was in the apartment.
W n the gunman went into the bedroom - followed by a fussing Tilor - the granddaughter ran out the front and only door.
this time, police had surrounded the building. While Harris looked out the window, Tilor grabbed a 3-foot pipe she keeps in her apartment.

olice said Tilor's continued scolding may have convinced Harris to give up.
