P.J. Boatwright Jr., long known as the world's foremost authority on the Rules of Golf, died of bone cancer at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, N.J. He was 63 and lived in Gladstone, N.J. Boatwright had served as the U.S. Golf Association's executive director of rules and competitions since 1980.

\ PGA Tour and tournament officials postponed the $1 million Independent Insurance Agent Open until Oct. 23-26, after steady rain had washed out the first two rounds at The Woodlands, Texas. It was the first PGA Tour event forced to be rescheduled since the 1966 Houston Open was moved to November and won by Arnold Palmer.
