EASTER FANS 16 TO LEAD CARROLL

Daniel Easter tied a school record Friday by striking out 16 batters to lead Carroll County to a 3-1 baseball victory over Giles.

Easter (1-0) permitted only five hits and walked three for the Cavaliers (4-1), and D.C. Cobler had a solo homer.

Stacy Hutchens had two hits and knocked in the only run for Giles (1-4).

In other baseball:

At Independence, Devin Floyd, Jason Cassell and Wes Billings each hit third-inning homers to help Grayson County whip Galax 10-2.

At Gretna, the Hawks scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 7-2 victory over Patrick County (3-3). Walt Haden had two hits and two RBI for Gretna (3-2).

At Marion, Shannon Archer hit a two-run homer as the Scarlet Hurricane (4-0) rallied to beat Chilhowie 5-3.

At New Castle, Lexington defeated Craig County 10-1 in a game called after four innings because of darkness. The game was marred when Rockets Larry Looney and Aaron Hendrick collided while trying to catch a bloop hit. Hendrick caught the ball, but both players were injured. Looney was thought to have a concussion; the extent of Hendrick's injury was unknown.

\ SOFTBALL: At Floyd, the Buffaloes scored runs in the late innings to sweep a doubleheader from Laurel Park, 11-10 and 12-7.
