GRANDMA SCOLDS WOULD-BE ROBBER INTO POLICE ARMS

A gunman was arrested after a 74-year-old great-grandmother forced him out of her apartment with a sharp tongue and a 3-foot pipe, police said.

Anthony Harris, 29, of Hampton, was charged with attempted robbery and abduction, police said.

Police said a man tried to rob a nearby 7-Eleven store Thursday, but fled without any loot after police showed up and started chasing him.

Lovett Tilor said Harris forced his way into her apartment and thrust a gun in her face.

Tilor knocked the gun away, began yelling at him to get out and started hitting him with her fists, said Tilor's 16-year-old granddaughter, who was in the apartment.

Police surrounded the building. While Harris looked out the window, Tilor grabbed a 3-foot pipe she keeps handy.

"I reached back and I was going to conk him on the head," Tilor said. But the gunman turned in time to grab the pipe and knock her down, she said.

Tilor opened the door and shoved Harris out, and police promptly arrested him. Police said Tilor's scolding may have convinced Harris to give up.
