The bodies of William A. Moneymaker, 16, and David Lee Moneymaker 8, were found by their father about 8:45 a.m., Sheriff Woody K. Bane said.
Their mother, Sandra, 36, was shot in the abdomen. She was in stable condition at Halifax County-South Boston Community Hospital after several hours of surgery, hospital officials said.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a call from Tucker Moneymaker, who said he went to work earlier and returned home to discover his wife and sons had been shot, Bane said.
Bane said the boys were shot in the head while they were sleeping sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., apparently with a .22-caliber rifle.
The sheriff said circumstances of the shooting were unknown, and refused to comment on possible motives.
"We could interview [Mrs. Moneymaker], but I don't know when that's possible," Bane said. "But we should be able to find out something at that point."
State police investigators and technicians are assisting Halifax County officials on the case, he said.
