TEACHER TOLD MOM HAD DIED IN BAGHDAD

Throughout the Persian Gulf War, Alleghany County teacher Sam Nauman worried about his mother and four sisters back in his native Baghdad.

He hadn't heard from them in a year.

When allied bombers knocked out Baghdad's electrical power, Nauman worried about what would happen to his elderly mother, Alice Mansour Nauman, who was on a dialysis machine.

When the war ended, he asked the Red Cross to try to find out.

Last week, he received a one-sentence reply: "Your mother died on March 19." No word about his sisters.

"I expected it, but I was hoping it wouldn't happen," Nauman said. "War is a cruel thing."

Prayers will be offered Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Edgar Mayse.
