ARIZONA LABELED POLITICALLY INCORRECT

I APPLAUD your March 13 editorial, "No credit for W&L Law School." You are correct in holding freedoms of speech and policy above the "silencing" of incorrect opinions through political pressure.

Though one may well disagree with discriminatory hiring policies practiced by government organizations, the Association of American Law Schools is simply practicing another form of exclusion (and extortion) by denying accreditation to law schools that permit military recruiting.

As a graduate of UVa, I understand Mr. Jefferson's value of personal freedoms and a democratic process. Yet another form of exclusion that persecutes freedom of local choice has been in the news. The political and commercial ostracism of Arizona for its refusal to recognize Martin Luther King Day ignores the right of each state to decide the issue. Again, there is a politically correct patina involved.

Most will agree such a great civil-rights leader deserves recognition. However, isn't the foundation of democracy secured in the right to cast one's ballot without fear of discrimination or reciprocity? BILL FAHRBACH ROANOKE
