As he left for a bonefishing trip in Florida recently, the president showed wire service photographers his reading material, a BASSMASTER Magazine containing a special section on worm fishing. The largest bass of the tournament last year was a 13-pound, 15-ounce catch by pro angler Rick Clunn. It was caught on a plastic worm.
The one-day tournament will be held on a 55-acre Alabama lake owned by Ray Scott, founder of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society. Bush has fished the lake as Scott's guest, but never in competition.
Several of the country's top pros will fish for $50,000 in prize money while being accompanied by a celebrity partner such as Bush.
Who gets to fish with the president?
Scott says that will be determined when the contestants throw darts at a poster of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
The $100,000 in entry fees will be used to help build a chapel for the Pintlala Baptist Church, in which Scott is a deacon.
The next stop for Scott, following the Eagles tournament, will be the weigh-in of the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. Federation National Championship at the Roanoke Civic Center, April 18-20.
