13 VIRGINIA COMPANIES MAKE FORTUNE LIST

Thirteen Virginia companies are among those listed on Fortune magazine's list of the nation's 500 largest firms. The 1990 list, ranking U.S. industrial or manufacturing companies by revenue, was released this month.

Mobil Corp. in Fairfax County is the state's largest company, at No. 5. with $58.8 billion in revenue and moved up from No. 6 in 1989.

Other Virginia firms that advanced on the list were: Lafarge Corp. of Reston, No. 256 at $1.6 billion, from No. 261; Fairchild Industries Inc. of Chantilly, No. 372 at $874.6 million, from No. 480; Smithfield Foods Inc. in Smithfield, No. 377 at $853.4 million, from No. 395; Dibrell Bros. Inc. in Danville, No. 403 at $768.4 million, from No. 427; and Media General Inc. in Richmond, No. 460 at $613.2 million, from No. 463.

Seven Virginia firms slid in the rankings: Reynolds Metals Co. in Richmond, No. 88 at $6.1 billion, No. 76; James River Corp. of Richmond, No. 97 at $5.4 billion, from No. 81; Gannett Co. Inc. of Rosslyn, No. 141 at $3.5 billion, from No. 130; Universal Corp. in Richmond, No. 162 at $2.8 billion, from No. 157; Ethyl Corp. in Richmond, No. 178 at $2.5 billion, from No. 163; Chesapeake Corp. in Richmond, No. 384 at $841.2 million, from No. 383; and Tredegar Industries in Richmond, No. 499 at $547.5 million, from No. 445.
