SCHOOL TEACHES YOU HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF

Do-it-yourselfers can upgrade their skills to help them build or renovate through courses offered by Yestermorrow, a design-and-build school in Warren, Vt.

"The best people to design a home are the owners," John Connell, the school's founder, said.

Two-week summer sessions cover design and on-site construction, with hands-on experience in site planning, pouring foundations, framing, wiring, plumbing and window and door installation. Limited to 15 students, the sessions are taught by teams of professional architects and builders. Special workshops cover estimating, permitting, subcontracting, design theory, drafting and basic engineering. Cost is $1,875, including room and board.

Graduates of the course may return tuition-free later for brush-up courses, and they can call the school's hotline any time for help on building and renovation problems.

\ Architects wouldn't dream of doing a major building or remodeling project without accurate scale plans, and neither should you.

Project planners for homes, kitchens, decks, landscapes and offices, available as kits from Stanley Tools, feature grids with peel-and-stick symbols of furnishings, appliances, shrubbery, etc., that will help you figure out your project before you start. The kits also have scaled rulers and a manual to help you as you plan.
