JEFFRIES, DESHAZO SHINE IN SCRIMMAGE

The running of tailback Jon Jeffries and quarterback Maurice DeShazo highlighted Virginia Tech's first scrimmage of spring football practice Saturday.

"That was the Jon Jeffries of old," coach Frank Beamer said after the rising senior picked up 33 yards on six carries. "He's got his quickness back and he showed it today."

Jeffries was a key player for the Hokies before undergoing knee surgery in 1989. He returned last season, but played sparingly behind Vaughn Hebron and Tony Kennedy.

DeShazo, a redshirt freshman who played at Bassett High, gained 66 yards on eight carries and had one burst for 45 yards. He scored a touchdown on a 4-yard run and completed three of five passes for 23 yards.

Will Furrer, Tech's No. 1 quarterback, saw limited action in the scrimmage, connecting on five of seven passes for 69 yards. Second-stringer Rodd Wooten completed three of five for 58.
