The Red team was led by sophomore quarterback Tony Scales, from Martinsville, and sophomore halfback Eric Walker, from North Cross. Scales carried four times for 84 yards, and Walker rushed five times for 87 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Reds opened the scoring in the second quarter after a funmble recovery by linebacker Rob Ed Snodgrass. Scales gained 33 yards on a third-down scramble, and fullback Dondi Smith followed with a 30-yard run. Senior halfback Scott Council then scored a touchdown from 2 yards out to finish the drive, but the extra point was blocked.
Walker's 70-yard gallop came on the Red team's opening possession of the second half, making it 13-0.
"I feel that our skill level has improved greatly," VMI head coach Jim Shuck said. "Walker had the big run, Scales played well, Smith looked good at fullback, as did Butch Jennings. And both Council and Al Carter ran hard at halfback."
Carter led the White team with 30 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving.
Junior quarterback Frank Wilder pulled the White team to 13-7 midway through the fourth quarter. Wilder capped an eight-play, 67-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jamie Whalen.
However, Scales and the Red team answered on the next possession with a nine-play, 65-yard drive. Council scored his second touchdown of the day on another 2-yard lunge to close out the scoring with 1:24 remaining in the game.
"Overall, I thought our enthusiasm was good, and our takcling was better than it had been," Shuck said. "But on the negative side, we gave up some big plays which we had been working to control, and we had six turnovers in only a 48-minute scrimmage."
