WEST VIRGINIA HAS MUCH TO OFFER

ED SHAMY'S column on Virginia/West Virginia license plates stated that West Virginia was the "backward" state. Before you stereotype West Virginia by jumping on the "poverty-coal-illiterate" bandwagon, let me assure you that it has much to offer and is no more "backward" than is Virginia.

If you looked further, you would find nice, caring people; cities that have culture, music and art programs; towns that have aspiring youngsters striving someday to become doctors, lawyers and teachers; and tourist attractions that make people want to come back for more. PAMELA K. PURDY ROANOKE
