Holmes, the 41-year-old former heavyweight champion, knocked out Tim "Doc" Anderson 2 minutes, 3 seconds into the first round of a scheduled 10-round fight at the Diplomat Hotel Sunday night.
Holmes, who had not fought in 3 1/2 years, threw nearly all the punches while the fight lasted, and Anderson took them as if it were his vocation.
"I feel today you're looking at a more mature Larry Holmes, more relaxed Larry Holmes, more competent Larry Holmes," the winner said after the fight. "The critics may say I didn't fight anyone tonight. The only thing that matters is what I think and what my family thinks."
Holmes said he expected his next fight would be against a "journeyman type" like Anderson.
Holmes, 236 pounds and a bit soft around the middle, was the aggressor from the start. He hurt Anderson with thudding rights to the ribs and had him in hasty retreat. Anderson appeared wide-eyed and frightened.
Holmes knocked Anderson down for the first time with four hard shots to the ribs. Anderson got to his feet on a count of five, and took the mandatory count of eight from referee Eddie Eckert.
Holmes wasted little time in hammering Anderson's ribs again. Holmes' right to the head knocked Anderson down the second time, and this time Eckert decided Anderson had had enough and waved an end to the bout.
Holmes is 49-3 with 35 knockouts. Anderson, who is from Miami, drops to 25-14 with 13 knockouts.
After his postfight news conference, Holmes was involved in a brawl with former opponent Trevor Berbick that spilled onto the street in front of the Diplomat Hotel. No injuries were reported and no arrests made.
