MURDER SUSPECT GIVES UP

Authorities evacuated a motel when a man wanted for murder barricaded himself in his room. He surrendered after negotiations with officers. No one was injured, FBI officials said.

Will Garrett, a spokesman for the FBI's Richmond office, said Sunday that agents received a tip that two fugitives from Washington were in Colonial Beach. Agents tracked the men down at a motel Garrett declined to name.

Neither fugitive was armed, he said.

Bobby Lee Hodges, 45, was arrested about 10:25 a.m. Sunday outside the motel after he left his room, Garrett said. Hodges was wanted on a federal warrant for receiving stolen property and on a parole violation, FBI officials said.

When officers tried to arrest Herbert Randolph Brown, he barricaded himself inside his room. The motel was evacuated, then officers began negotiating with Brown, Garrett said. Brown, 32, was wanted on a federal murder warrant, the agency said.

Authorities negotiated with Brown in person and over the telephone. He surrendered about 10:45 a.m., Garrett said.

The FBI was assisted by officers from the Washington police, Colonial Beach police and Westmoreland County sheriff's departments.

Hodges and Brown are being held at the Rappahannock Security Center in Fredericksburg.
