Hawthorne Isaac (Hoppy) Austin, age 65, departed this life Monday, April 8, 1991, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Left to cherish his memories is his loving wife, Alice Wilson Austin. Born in Rockbridge County on March 31, 1926, he was the son of Mrs. Clemmie Austin Newcomb of Buchanan and the late Isaac Austin. He was a devoted member of the Arnolds Valley Southern Baptist Church where he served in the choir and the Board of Deacons. He was a Naval veteran of World War II and a former employee of Modine Manufacturing. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Mary Mildred Austin, and two sisters, Sadie Tolley and Linda Shafer. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Richard Manspile, Natural Bridge; Shelia and Warren Kutz, Buena Vista; Marjory and James Blankenship, Moneta; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Bob Walker, Lynchburg; two brothers, John O. Austin, Buchanan; Lindsey M. Austin, Fincastle; three sisters, Mrs. Isabelle Robinette, Roanoke; Mrs. Virginia Flint, Natural Bridge; Mrs. Alice Wells, Raphine; ten grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; a host of other relatives and many devoted friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 1991, at the Arnolds Valley Southern Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Donald W. Stine and Dr. D.B. Martin. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Arnolds Valley Southern Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington, and other times at the residence.
