OHIO STAR COMMITS TO VMI

Bobby Jones, a first-team all-state basketball player in Ohio, said Monday that he has made an oral commitment to VMI.

Jones, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 19.4 points and 8.3 rebounds as a senior at Forest Park High in Cincinnati.

Jones received interest from several teams in the Mid-American Conference, but his only recruiting visits were to VMI and Wright State in Dayton, Ohio.

Jones plans to sign Wednesday, the first day of the spring signing period.

At Tampa, Fla., presidents of the remaining four Sun Belt Conference schools voted to accept a merger with the American South Conference.

The seven-member American South voted in favor of the merger last Friday. The merger will go into effect July 2.

Jacksonville, South Alabama, Western Kentucky and Arkansas-Little Rock remain in the Sun Belt after five other schools moved to other conferences - UNC Charlotte, South Florida and Virginia Commonwealth to the Metro, Old Dominion to the Colonial and Alabama-Birmingham to the new Great Midwest Conference.

Scheduling, championships, bylaws and a name for the new conference are still to be worked out, Sun Belt Commissioner Jim Lessig said.
