SHAWSVILLE MAN HELD IN RAPE, HAMMER BEATING

A 31-year-old Shawsville man was arrested Sunday in connection with the rape and hammer beating of a Roanoke woman over the weekend.

Leroy Bryson Jr. was charged with rape and malicious wounding. He surrendered to police, said Lt. Richard Absher of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department. Bryson was being held in the Montgomery County Jail.

Absher said the assault occurred Saturday at Bryson's home in Shawsville. The woman, 28, sustained head injuries and was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, he said.
