Haymon, who lives in Baton Rouge, La., writes about the power of Earth, women, memory, grief, the Mississippi River and Louisiana cooking.
She also gives poetry workshops in schools in conjunction with the Arts Council of Louisiana and will conduct a few at New River schools during her visit.
Her plays for children, "Tellin' on the Levee" and "The Quest of Jody Nothing," have toured extensively in her home state.
