BYRD RIPS NORTH CROSS/

William Byrd continued its fast start to the high school baseball season by pounding North Cross 10-0 Monday at Penn Forest.

The Terriers' Chris Woolfolk pitched a four-hitter, striking out 10, in a game called after five innings. Byrd is 7-0-1; the Raiders, 2-6.

Matt Reynolds and Chris Carr each hit two-run homers for William Byrd. Carr, a freshman who had never played or dressed for a varsity game, homered in his first at-bat in the fifth inning.

Woolfolk also led the Terriers' hitting with two singles in three at-bats and knocked in two runs.

In other baseball:

At Covington, Dee Dalton pounded a two-run homer in the first inning and had three hits while driving in three runs and scoring twice as Cave Spring (3-3) beat Alleghany 7-4 in a non-district game.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Andy McDonald scored the game's only goal 20 minutes into the second half as North Cross (7-0-1) nipped Martinsville 1-0 in a non-district match on the Bulldogs' field. Neil Marshall recorded the shutout. Martinsville is 1-2-1.

Bruk Alemayhu scored on a penalty kick in overtime to give Salem (3-3 overall, 1-0 district) a 2-1 Blue Ridge District home victory against Northside. Aaron Curfiss scored for the Vikings (0-4, 0-1). Binh Nguyen had the Spartans' other goal.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Salem, North Cross' Brandy Markell scored the lone goal on an assist by Anne Conway Jennings to take a 1-0 victory against the Spartans. North Cross improved to 2-3.

\ SOFTBALL: At North Cross, Erin and Kristen Humphries combined to go 5-for-5 and drive in seven runs as North Cross beat Carlisle 14-0 in a Blue Ridge Conference slow-pitch game. Erin Humphries hit a three-run homer in the first inning and had two more hits for North Cross (5-0, 3-0).

Glenvar (4-0, 2-0) took to the road and pounded Covington 24-0 in a Pioneer District game as Stephanie Martin twirled a one-hitter, struck out nine and drove in three runs. Bobbie Jo Wright had a bases-loaded homer in the second.

At Cave Spring, sophomore Jenny Kallio struck out seven and issued five walks in pitching a one-hitter in a 20-0 rout of E.C. Glass. Jackie Baker was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI for the Knights (2-0).

Marcee Hufton pitched a four-hitter and William Byrd (2-1) came up with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Patrick Henry 4-2 in a non-district game.
