FORMER POLICEMAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT

A former Virginia State Police sergeant who had recently announced his candidacy for sheriff of Henry County died Monday after his pickup truck ran off a Franklin County Road.

Michael Clay Holley, 49, died at 1:40 p.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

State police said the accident happened about two hours earlier, when Holley was driving north on Virginia 890 about a half-mile north of Virginia 627.

Holley apparently lost control of his pickup; it ran off the right shoulder, skidded back across the highway and overturned, state police said.

Holley, of Ridgeway, spent more than 20 years with the state police before retiring about eight years ago, state police said. He recently had announced plans to run for Henry County sheriff in the fall. - Staff report
