GRADUATING LAWYERS SEEK COURT CLERKSHIPS

Graduating lawyers are flocking to apply for federal court clerkships, though the post pays only $31,000 a year.

Federal judges say its a simple matter of economics: too many lawyers and too few jobs inslow economy times.

About 170 students applied for approximately 14 positions on the one-year tour at U.S. District Court in Norfolk. About 60 applicants, chosen on the basis of grades and writing samples, were called in last week for interviews.

Though clerks earn less than what they could in private practice, both they and applicants say that working with a judge is invaluable experience.
