STATE TRIES 60 CARS, TRUCKS IN GAS PROJECT

The state Department of Transportation is converting 60 passenger vehicles and pickup trucks to use compressed natural gas in a test project.

The General Assembly authorized the test last year in a resolution that called for a limited study of natural gas as an alternative fuel for state vehicles.

The 18-month test will begin this summer and involve 20 vehicles in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads.
