19-YEAR-OLD GETS LIFE FOR KILLING MOTEL CLERK

A judge spared the life of a 19-year-old man convicted of killing a motel clerk.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for Ronald Murray in the March 1990 robbery and killing.

Citing Murray's age and lack of a criminal record, Circuit Judge Edward Hanson sentenced him to two life terms plus 27 years in prison.

Julie Benica, 28, had been working her last night shift on March 13, when Murray and his brother, Alfred Dallas Bastible stole $240 from the cash register. Later,Murray shot her in the back of the head.
