At Natural Bridge, Rockbridge's Kris Whitesell came out on top of a pitchers' duel with the help of his bat as the Rebels beat Natural Bridge 3-1 in a non-district game.
Whitesell pitched seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out 12. He also hit a solo home run.
Jason Knick pitched seven innings, striking out 15, for the Rockets (1-3).
At Pearisburg, Galax sent 12 to bat and scored seven runs with two out in the fifth inning on the way to defeating host Giles 10-9 in a Mountain Empire District game.
Galax had 11 walks and seven hits but had to have Randy Billings' RBI single to break a 9-9 tie in the seventh inning.
\ SOFTBALL: Amoreli Ronquillo hit two two-run home runs in Roanoke Catholic's 23-run first inning, and the Celtics went on to pound visiting Carlisle 33-0 at Wasena Park in Roanoke.
Roanoke Catholic (2-0) had 15 hits in the first inning.
Ronquillo, a senior second baseman and catcher, went 3-for-3 with the two homers and a double for a total of four RBI. Sarah Brady went 3-for-3 with five RBI, including two-run homer in the second inning, a triple and a single.
Carlisle pitchers walked 14 Celtics.
The Chiefs are 0-2.
At Alleghany, the host Mountaineers (1-3) got four hits each from Nicole Curtis and Tonia Nelson on the way to a 35-17 non-district victory over William Fleming (1-4).
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At William Byrd, Manuel Goizueta scored three goals and the host Terriers (1-1, 1-0) opened their Blue Ridge District schedule with a 14-0 victory over Alleghany (0-3, 0-1).
Bernt Bjerkan and Stewart Kelly each had two goals and Chris Blevins had three assists for the Terriers, who took 60 shots and held the Mountaineers to four shots.
