STAFF WRITER AMONG FINALISTS

Charles Hite, medical writer for the Roanoke Times & World-News, was one of three finalists for a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism for a series about the medical and moral issues surrounding the care given in hospital medical intensive care units.

Hite wrote his series after spending 12 weeks in the intensive-care unit of the University of Virginia Hospital. He described how life-and-death decisions were made and the effect they had on patients, families and staff.

The four-part series ran in March 1990.

This was the third consecutive year the Roanoke Times & World-News has been a Pulitzer finalist.

Last year, the newspaper's staff was a finalist in general news reporting for its coverage of the nine-month strike of Pittston Coal Group by the United Mine Workers in Southwest Virginia.

In 1989, staff writer Mary Bishop was a finalist for her investigative series on pest-control industries. Her series prompted legislation that strengthened Virginia's regulation of pesticides and pest-control operators.
