CAVS WHIP GREEN WAVE

James Phillips and Richard Bowman each hit a grand slam and host Carroll County powered past Narrows 12-4 in a non-district baseball game at Hillsville on Tuesday.

Phillips' grand slam came in the first inning, and Bowman, who went 2-for-4, hit his in the second.

Kevin Lindsey (2-0) walked two and struck out three in six innings for the Cavaliers (5-1).

Mason Brag hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Green Wave (4-3), and Chris Dunford had two hits.

In other baseball:

At Pearisburg, Galax sent 12 to bat in the fifth inning and scored seven runs with two out on the way to defeating host Giles 10-9 in a Mountain Empire District game.

Galax had 11 walks and seven hits but had to have Randy Billings' RBI single to break a 9-9 tie in the seventh inning.

Christiansburg and guest Northside played nine innings but still could not resolve a 6-6 tie before darkness forced the end of the game.

Northside (1 1/2- 1/2) took a 6-0 lead in the first inning before Christiansburg battled back (1 1/2-3 1/2), finally catching up with a three-run fifth inning.

At Lexington, Andy Wilmer drove in three runs, Mike Friski and Brian Kessinger had two RBI each in leading the host Scarlet Hurricane past Parry McCluer 9-8 in non-district play.

Lexington is 3-1, and the Fighting Blues are 0-1-1.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Liberty, Ryan Beaster scored two unassisted goals and Jason Kennedy scored another to lead Jefferson Forest past Liberty 3-0.

At Patrick Henry, Heritage (1-0) got a goal from Mason Kell and beat Patrick Henry 1-0 in a match called at halftime because of lightning.

The Patriots (1-1) lost despite outshooting the Pioneers 10-3.

\ SOFTBALL: At New Castle, three Rockbridge pitchers combined to walk 27 hitters and Craig County (2-2, 2-1) took advantage for a 26-11 Pioneer District victory.

The Rebels are 0-2 and 0-1.

At Rocky Mount, Sherry Jones was 3-for-4, including a two-run homer and a double, in leading unbeaten Halifax (3-0) to a 6-4 victory over Franklin County (3-3).
