11 FIRMS HONORED FOR MILITARY SUPPORT

Eleven Western Virginia firms have received awards from the Virginia Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for their support of employees called to military duty during Operation Desert Storm.

The firms recognized for support of employees on military duty and for families of servicemen and women are:

Dillard Paper Co., Salem; Bassett Furniture Industries, Bassett; Green Associates Inc., Roanoke; Appalachian Power Co., Roanoke; WDBJ-TV, Roanoke; Ingersoll-Rand Co., Rock Drill Division, Roanoke; Gardner-Denver Mining and Construction, Roanoke; Roanoke County; Dominion Bankshares Corp., Roanoke; Ferrum College, Ferrum; and the City of Galax.

Three other companies, nominated by their employees, will receive plaques at a banquet at Wintergreen resort Saturday. Those three companies are Volvo-GM Heavy Truck Corp., Dublin; Hoechst Celanese Inc., Narrows, and Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount. They were cited for permitting employees to take time off for reserve duties. - Staff report
