PULITZER JOURNALISTS ANNOUNCED/ NEW YORK TIMES, WASHINGTON POST WIN 2 AWARDS

The Washington Post and The New York Times each won two awards as the 1991 Pulitzer Prizes for journalism were announced Tuesday.

The gold medal for public service went to The Des Moines (Iowa) Register for stories about a rape victim who publicly identified herself and discussed the effect of the ordeal on her life.

The spot-news reporting Pulitzer went to The Miami Herald for stories about a religious sect leader accused of masterminding 14 killings.

Greg Marinovich of The Associated Press won the Pulitzer for spot-news photography for pictures showing supporters of South Africa's African National Congress killing a man they believed was a Zulu spy.

The Washington Post's two prizes went to Caryle Murphy in the international-reporting category for her stories filed from occupied Kuwait, and to Jim Hoagland in the commentary category for his columns on events leading up to the Gulf War and the political problems of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

The New York Times' awards went to Serge Schmemann in international reporting and to Natalie Angier in the beat-reporting category.

Joseph T. Hallinan and Susan M. Headden of The Indianapolis Star won the Pulitzer for investigative reporting.

The Wall Street Journal's Susan C. Faludi won the explanatory-journalism award.

Reporters Marjie Lundstrom and Rochelle Sharpe of Gannett News Service won the prize for national reporting.

The Pulitzer for feature writing went to Sheryl James of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.

The Los Angeles Times' David Shaw won the Pulitzer for criticism.

The Pulitzer for editorial writing was given to Ron Casey, Harold Jackson and Joey Kennedy of The Birmingham (Ala.) News.

Jim Borgman of The Cincinnati Enquirer won the Pulitzer for editorial cartooning.

The feature-photography prize went to William Snyder of The Dallas Morning News.
