PUBLIC HOUSING/ NEW INTEREST IN TENANTS

THE ROANOKE Housing Authority is to be congratulated for its new interest in encouraging stronger tenant groups in public housing.

Strong tenant associations can help increase residents' control over their own lives and community, and can help fight the despair, violence and drugs infecting the projects.

The other good news to emerge from an authority meeting Monday was announcement of an effort to improve communication between tenants and the board of commissioners.

Project managers should make regular reports on tenants' concerns at board meetings, it was suggested. Nice idea.

It makes sense for board members to acquaint themselves with tenants' concerns. Movement in this direction is as welcome as it is overdue.
