SWOPE LEADS LEXINGTON GIRLS TO VICTORY

Laura Swope won three individual events in leading Lexington to victory in a Pioneer District girls' track meet in Buchanan. Swope won the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 7 3/4 inches; won the triple jump with an effort of 32-1; and won the 100-meter dash in 13.5 seconds. The Scarlet Hurricane had 89 points, host James River 59, Rockbridge 55 1/2 and Glenvar 21 1/2.

In other track:

At Buchanan, Danny Peery won both hurdles races to lead James River to a Pioneer District boys' victory. Peery won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.4 seconds and won the 300 hurdles in 44 seconds. The Knights had 104 points, followed by Glenvar's 83, Lexington's 22 and Rockbridge's 11.

\ BASEBALL: Robert Ryan had three hits, including, a homer, and four RBI, and Jason Booth doubled and tripled for three RBI as Shawsville (7-1) routed visiting Natural Bridge 14-4 in a game called after five innings because of the slaughter rule. Mickey Akers was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and walking three. Natural Bridge is 2-4.

In a game that featured 20 walks and 10 hits, Grayson County beat visiting Marion 7-5 in a non-district contest. The Blue Devils (4-2) led 6-1 then survived a late rally by Marion (4-2).

At Stuart, Chris Stanley tripled in the two tying runs, then scored the winner in the fifth inning as Patrick County (4-2) nipped Fieldale-Collinsville 5-4. Eddie Spitz (4-0) retired the final nine batters to get the victory.

At Covington, Randy Perkins laced a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning that rallied Covington (3-3) to a 6-4 victory against Alleghany.

\ SOCCER: At Martinsville, Ryan Shearer had three goals and Todd Jenkins and Hann Hobson had two apiece as Martinsville thrashed Fieldale-Collinsville 10-0 in a Piedmont District match.
