SMITH SPARKS RADFORD COMEBACK

Brody Smith started a seven-run sixth inning with a two-run single Wednesday as Radford rallied to an 8-5 non-district baseball victory over visiting Lord Botetourt.

Trailing 5-1 after 5 1/2 innings the Bobcats (3-0-1) clawed back. Chris Learn drove in two more runs in the inning with a double. Lord Botetourt (1-2-1) out-hit Radford 12-8.

Learn also picked up the victory for Radford and improved his record to 2-0.

In other baseball:

At Bedford, Jeff Lewis hit a grand slam and Butch Dreany added a three-run home run as the Minutemen (6-0, 6-0) stayed unbeaten by smashing Appomattox 20-3 in a Seminole District game. Liberty pitcher Scott Martin (3-0) helped himself by going 4-for-5 with three RBI. At Blacksburg, Ronald Mitchiner was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and Matt Smith homered in Blacksburg's 8-3 victory against Giles. Stacy Hutchison accounted for all the Spartans' runs with a three-run home run. Blacksburg is 2-4.

At Riner, sophomore right-hander Jeremy West pitched a three-hitter and went 3-for-3 with three RBI on offense as host Auburn (3-4) whipped winless Craig County 16-3 in a non-district game called after five innings because of the 10-run slaughter rule.

West struck out nine and walked two.

Chris Shark went 3-for-3 with three RBI and scored three runs; Chris Belcher went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI; and Jason Lytton went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored for Auburn (3-4).

Robert Ryan had three hits, including, a homer, and four RBI and Jason Booth doubled and tripled for three RBI as Shawsville (7-1) routed visiting Natural Bridge 14-4 in a game called off after five innings because of the slaughter rule. Mickey Akers was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and walking three. Natural Bridge is 2-4.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Christiansburg, Northside's Patti Fisher won four events but Christiansburg rolled to a 77-48 dual-meet victory. Fisher won the 110-meter hurdles, the 330 hurdles, and the long and triple jumps.
