"It was a game that I thought would never end," Greensboro Monarchs head coach Jeff Brubaker said Wednesday.
In what easily was the longest game in the ECHL's three-year history, Hampton Roads nipped Greensboro 2-1 when Dave Flanagan scored at 5:05 of the third 20-minute overtime period. Flanagan's goal ended the game at 1:23 a.m., nearly six hours after the 7:30 p.m. starting time.
Monarchs goalie Nick Vitucci and Admirals goalie Dave Gagnon dominated the game, making 54 and 52 saves, respectively.
"I've been involved in a couple of long games, double overtime or so, but nothing like this," Brubaker said. "We played hockey for 105 minutes. It was so long that the players and myself were so drained it was hard to get excited anymore. I thought the game was over on at least 20 occasions."
Brubaker, whose club trails Hampton Roads 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, estimated that some 1,600 of the 3,637 fans in attendance stayed for the duration.
