FURRER, MICKEL SPARK HOKIES' OFFENSE

Quarterback Will Furrer and flanker Marcus Mickel provided most of the fireworks as Virginia Tech's offense continued to shine Wednesday in its second spring football scrimmage.

Furrer connected with Mickel on three passes for 70 yards, including touchdowns of 12 and 38 yards. Furrer, who set a Tech season record for touchdown passes with 19 in 1990, hit sophomore split end Steve Sanders with a 14-yard scoring pass.

The 6-foot-3 senior was 6-of-9 for 106 yards.

"Right now, our offense is definitely ahead of our defense . . . and it should be," coach Frank Beamer said. "We have a lot of experienced players back on offense, and that's been the key . . . in our first two scrimmages." - Staff report
