HAMPDEN-SYDNEY NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

A California educator was named the 21st president of Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday.

Ralph A. Rossum will assume his duties at the end of this academic year. He is vice president and dean of the faculty at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif.

Rossum, 46, will replace acting president Scott Colley at Hampden-Sydney. Colley will return to his duties as dean of faculty. Colley held the temporary position for a year after James Leutze left the school to become president of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Rossum is a summa cum laude graduate of Concordia College. He holds a graduate degree from the University of Chicago.

Rossum's appointment was announced after a nine-month search.
