WYTHE SUPERVISORS OK TOLL-FREE COUNTY LINE

Residents in some outlying parts of Wythe County must use long distance to telephone agencies at the county seat in Wytheville, but that is about to change.

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors approved an $11,500 toll-free system Tuesday which will allow those calls to be made to an 800 number. It will be funded from county reserve funds and should be in operation by July.

All county agencies will be on the toll-free number except for the office of the commonwealth's attorney, which is on a different line, and the county social services department, which is working on its own system.

In other action, the supervisors named Assistant County Administrator J.C. Higginbotham as acting emergency services coordinator until a replacement is found. Kathy Davidson will resign as coordinator April 30 because she has moved to Roanoke.

Roy Brewer, the current School Board chairman, was the only nominee from the Speedwell District for a new board term. He has served for 14 years.
