SISTER CITY DONATES FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIP

Wonju, Korea, one of Roanoke's two sister cities, has sent a gift of $500 "for the Korean poor students of Roanoke as a scholarship."

The money was given to Mayor Noel Taylor by a group of high school students from Wonju during a recent week-long visit at Patrick Henry High School. It was donated by the Sister City Committee in Wonju.

The Wonju Group of Roanoke Sister Cities is coordinating a search for a Korean or Korean-American student living in Roanoke who needs financial assistance for post-secondary education. The money must be paid directly to an institution for the cost of tuition.

Applications may be sent to Wonju Group, Roanoke Sister Cities, P.O. Box 136, Roanoke 24002.

Roanoke Sister Cities is a non-profit citizen corporation that coordinates people-to-people cultural exchange programs with two cities: Wonju, Korea, and Kisumu, Kenya. Wonju and Roanoke have been sister cities since 1964, and the tie with Kisumu was established in 1976. Each program is operated by a separate committee.

Mayor Hwan Jee Park of Wonju wrote Taylor: "Our friendship and understanding have been improving daily. I also believe the exchange of knowledge and opinion among the youths will help for the future of our sister-city relationship."
