GUDRUN FREEMAN of Roanoke has received her doctorate degree in family studies from Virginia Tech.

Freeman, who received a master's degree from Hollins College, has been a family counselor in the Roanoke Valley for 12 years. During that time she served as the counseling coordinator for Mental Health Services of the Roanoke Valley.

She practices at the Center For Family Counseling.

BARBARA FLANAGAN, a learning disabilities teacher at Mountain View Elementary School and education coordinator of the Parent Resource Center, is the recipient of this year's Virginia Council for Learning Disabilities' Outstanding Teacher Award. The award is given annually to an teacher who demonstrates exemplary achievement in the areas of advocacy for the learning disabled and the development of innovative instructional strategies.
