That's because the Keydets' last basketball signees from Fleming were twins Ramon and Damon Williams.
"I think VMI is getting the same kind of steal they got with the twins," Fleming coach Burrall Paye said. "The Division IIIs were licking their chops because they could see themselves getting a Division I talent."
That was before VMI came up with the offer of a full scholarship. Milam visited the campus Wednesday and signed when he returned to Roanoke.
"I always thought I would play Division I," said Milam, who transferred to Fleming from Salem before his senior year, "but, at the end, I wasn't sure I would get a chance. Coach Paye told me they were going to offer me, but I wasn't sure until I heard it myself."
Milam, a 6-foot-5 forward, is one of three players who signed Wednesday with the Keydets. Guard Bobby Jones from Cincinnati committed to VMI earlier in the week, and 6-2 Brian Woolsey from Pineville, W.Va., made up his mind Wednesday evening.
Woolsey averaged 31.7 points per game, including games of 57 and 51 points. He set a state record by making 12 3-point field goals in one game.
Woolsey, a 4.0 student, was scouted by Davidson and four Southern Conference programs, but he took his only recruiting visits to VMI and Concord.
He played point guard and shooting guard for Pineville but says he wants to play shooting guard in college. Woolsey had 159 assists as Pineville won 24 games in a row before losing in the West Virginia Class AA state tournament.
"Coach [Pete] Strickland at VMI says he reminds him of [former Keydet] Gay Elmore, only he's not as tall," said Bob Stewart, the coach at Pineville, located between Beckley and Bluefield.
Milam played power forward for Fleming, where he averaged more than 14 points and seven rebounds. He is expected to be a small forward at VMI.
"He had to play inside for us," Paye said, "but he's a very good shooter, with 3-point range."
VMI's lone fall recruit was 6-5 Luis Anderson from Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist Junior College.
In other recruiting:
Northside guard Chad Briscoe, the player of the year in the Blue Ridge District, has signed with Anderson University, an NAIA program in Indiana. Briscoe, who averaged 11.5 points and led the Vikings in assists, is the son of an Anderson alumnus.
Louisville signed the top-rated point guard on the West Coast, 5-11 Damon Stoudamire from Portland, who turned down Arizona, Oregon and Oregon State. Stoudamire faces assault charges from a fight in his school's cafeteria.
Maryland lost one of its prime recruiting targets when 6-8 Donyell Marshall from Reading, Pa., picked Connecticut over the Terrapins. The Huskies, who signed six players during the fall, already had one of the top-rated classes in the country.
Radford University women's coach Lubomyr Lichonczak announced commitments from 5-8 Kathleen Lamport of Hobart, N.Y., and 6-1 Angel Donley of Dry Ridge, Ky. Lamport was the most valuable player in the Delaware League in basketball and soccer; Lichonczak calls Donley "a tremendous defensive player."
