ROANOKE ALUMNI GAME FEATURES PAST GREATS

Some of Roanoke College's best basketball players in the past 10 years will return for an alumni game Saturday at Homer Bast Gymnasium starting at 1:30 p.m.

Former All-American Gerald Holmes and Kenny Belton, who was one of the sparks in the Maroons' rebuilding program under Ed Green, will play for the alumni team of the 1980s against a squad composed of seniors from the last two years.

Holmes headed Roanoke's 1983 team that went 31-4 as the winningest Division III team and finished third in the national tournament after winning the consolation game.

Belton was one of the first recruits for Green and joined Mike Styles, Mike Baker and Bruce Hembrick in returning Roanoke as a national power in the Division II ranks.

Green, coach of Roanoke from 1977 to 1989, will coach the older alumni team along with Mike Parrish, who was his first assistant. Page Moir, Roanoke's current head coach, will head up the younger alumni team.

Also attending will be Peter Dec, a 1980 graduate, who was the last basketball player ever to receive a full scholarship for his athletic ability. Roanoke then dropped to Division III, which doesn't allow athletic scholarships, but honored its commitment to Dec, who kept his grant-in-aid.

The alumni team from the 1980s:

Peter Dec, Rick Weber, 1980; Kenny Belton, Mike Styles, Mike Baker, Bruce Hembrick, 1981; Jeff Rakes and Tony Bond, 1982; Donnie Morris and Gerald Holmes, 1983; Angelo Hardy, 1984. - Staff report
