HOKIES HONORING LAIRD

Virginia Tech will honor Greene F. "Red" Laird, who won 343 games in two stints as the Hokies' baseball coach, by naming the home dugout at English Field after him.

Laird coached Tech from 1940-43 and again from 1948-73. He was 343-275-4, including a 27-7 record in 1969. He is enshrined in Tech's Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will take place before Tech's game against South Carolina today. The Gamecocks will be in town for a three-game series.

"[The dedication is] one of the highlights of my life," said Laird, 88, who resides in Blacksburg. - Staff report
