MAROONS' JENKINS ON VASID 1ST TEAM

Senior forward Karen Jenkins of Roanoke College has been selected a first-team member of the 1990-91 Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State College Division Women's Basketball team announced Thursday.

Junior guard Debby Jones of Roanoke College and junior forward Robin Gaines of Hollins College were second-team selections. Ferrum College's Kerri Lynch and Sarah Quesenberry, both freshman guards, and Emory & Henry sophomore forward Charity Rooney received honorable mentions.

Jenkins, a graduate of William Byrd High School, averaged 12.2 points this past season and scored 1,235 in her career, fifth on the Maroons' all-time list. Her 102 blocked shots top the all-time list, and her 725 rebounds rank second. She was voted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year.

Senior shooting guard Melody Derrow of Bridgewater College was voted the player of the year and Norfolk State University coach James Sweat was selected coach of the year. Derrow, a 5-foot-7 shooting guard, averaged 17.3 points per game in leading Bridgewater to a 20-8 record. Sweat, in his third year as head coach, led the Lady Spartans to a 33-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Final Four. The complete teams:

SECOND TEAM: Hollins junior forward Robin Gaines, Christopher Newport freshman guard Karen Barefoot, Virginia Union senior guard Michelle Drayton, Norfolk State junior guard Samantha Thompson, Roanoke junior guard Debby Jones.
