NORTH CROSS TOPS CATHOLIC

Blair Calvert drove in Julie McGhee with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give North Cross a 6-5 victory over visiting Roanoke Catholic in a Blue Ridge Conference softball game on Thursday.

Calvert was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Raiders (7-0 overall, 3-0 in the conference).

Jenny Reynolds was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Roanoke Catholic (2-1, 2-1).

In other softball:

At New Castle, Craig County made 23 errors, helping Parry McCluer beat the Rockets 37-23 in a Pioneer District game.

For Craig County (2-3, 2-2), Tina Trenor and Shelly Kesser each was 2-for-2 with three RBI.

At Glenvar, Tammi Beamer was 2-for-3 with two RBI as Glenvar (5-0, 3-0) defeated Bath County 8-6 in a Pioneer District game. The Chargers are 3-2.

At Buchanan, James River took advantage of nine errors and 21 walks to defeat Rockbridge 30-13 in a Pioneer District game. James River pitchers issued 18 walks. Mary Definbaugh went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI for the Knights (6-0, 4-0).

At Martinsville, Danae Wagner had two home runs and drove in four runs as visiting Roanoke Valley Christian (1-2) grilled Carlisle 31-0.

\ BASEBALL: At Glenvar, Sean Grinnell's hit into right-center field drove in the winning run with two out in the bottom of the eighth as the Highlanders (5-0) took a 6-5 non-district victory from Parry McCluer (0-2-1).

Jason Anderson was 3-for-5 with three RBI, including a two-run homer, and allowed one hit, one run and one walk and struck out six in 4 innings to pick up the win in relief.

At Maher Field, Lenny Navitskis pitched a one-hitter to lead Cave Spring (5-3, 3-1) in a 14-1 rout of William Fleming (0-7, 0-3). Ernie Caldwell was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Dee Dalton scored four runs and had two hits.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Tim Epperly and Doug Bramblett scored two goals each as Lord Botetourt (5-0-1, 1-0) ripped visiting Alleghany 9-1 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Danny Wright scored twice and Kelly Graham had two assists as host William Fleming (2-3, 1-1) won 4-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game against Pulaski County (0-1-2, 0-1-1).

At Rocky Mount, Patrick Henry (1-1-1, 0-0-1) and host Franklin County (3-2-2, 0-0-2) tied 1-1 despite two overtimes in the Roanoke Valley District game.

Visiting William Byrd won its Blue Ridge District opener 3-1 over Salem (3-4, 1-1). William Byrd is 1-0 in the district.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Casey Kesler scored in overtime for visiting Patrick Henry, but Cave Spring's Chanda Ingram scored late in the extra period to give the Knights a 1-1 tie in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Goalie Michelle Godley had 26 saves for Cave Spring (4-1-1, 0-1-1). PH is 4-0-1, 1-0-1.
