The scholarship, which was met with unanimous approval by the School Board Wednesday, is the third offered by the company to county graduates.
The company already has created two $2,200 Celco Achievement Awards available each year to a graduate from each of the county's two high schools.
As stated in a letter from Robert Campbell, superintendent of employee organization and development at the Narrows plant, the purpose of the scholarship is to "recognize outstanding achievement in math and science and to encourage students to pursue careers in these fields."
In other matters, McCracken said 23 employees, including 15 teachers, have decided to take advantage of the state's early-retirement offer.
As a means of trimming the state's budget, Gov. Douglas Wilder's administration has offered an early-retirement incentive to state employees who are at least 50 years old and have 25 years on the job.
McCracken said the early retirements do not mean these positions will be lost. They likely will be filled by lower-paid employees, he said.
Because of the savings the county will realize as a result of the program, he said, two jobs the School Board had previously eliminated will be restored - one custodial and one secretarial.
