WILDER ON CBS, PUSHES DRUG TESTS

Gov. Douglas Wilder took his drug-testing campaign - and his presidential campaign - to the national airwaves Thursday.

In an appearance on the CBS program "This Morning," Wilder reiterated his call for drug testing of college students.

Wilder presented it as a class issue.

"The American people who subsidize many of our college campuses" don't want to see them become drug havens, Wilder said. Furthermore, he said, Americans don't want "to treat students on college campuses different from students in the ghetto."

Referring to the recent drug raid on University of Virginia fraternity houses, Wilder said "They had six months notice in Virginia to clean up their act. You don't get that warning in the street."

Wilder disputed studies that indicate drug use on campuses is on the decline. Without drug testing, "we don't know whether drug use on campuses has gone down or not," he said.
